About 8,500 people who waited in line hours (the lineup apparently started at 11 a.m.) before Canadian electrohouse DJ Deadmau5 went on stage were the lucky ones as they were treated to a massive dance party at LiveCity Yaletown last night. The 20,000 who were turned away after the gates were closed danced in the streets as Deadmau5 promised via his Twitter feed: “Ill try to crank the s**t out of the PA so all the lovelies outside can enjoy too!” It was an awesome night and, if you weren’t there, live it vicariously through Mike Usinger’s Georgia Straight review.

Wilco – LiveCity Yaletown
It poured but it was still great. Wilco performed Saturday at LiveCity Yaletown as part of the entertainment of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. Read music ed Mike Usinger’s Georgia Straight review of the show by clicking here.
Ice-O-Topes Espetacular
In the ongoing saga of the Ice-O-Topes calendar story, we were interviewed by charming Brazilian journalist Paulo Henrique for popular South American news show Domingo Espetacular Friday morning. The Brazilian journalists, who are in Vancouver for the 2010 Olympics, somehow heard about the calendar and came out to the rink to talk to a few of us. Henrique was quite interested in the idea of women playing hockey and even stepped out on the ice to show off his soccer skills. And, well, watch the video to see how that went.
For those of you new to the story of the calendar, click here for a bit of background.
Vancouver 2010 Olympics – portrait of ceremony choreographer
The Vancouver 2010 Olympics kick off today – already! The fellow I photographed above for CanWest News Services is none other than Jean Grand-Maitre, the artist director of the Alberta Ballet and choreographer of the opening and closing ceremonies of this city’s Olympic Games. I recently spent a lovely morning with Jean, his partner Jason and their beautiful dog Rembrandt, to illustrate this story.
Photography and the Pin-up Hockey Calendar – CTV appearance
As many of you already know, I photographed my hockey team’s 2010 calendar, pin-up style (but with hockey gear). The calendar has been selling quite well as not only is it a fundraiser for the team, but also for the Britannia After School Hockey program in East Vancouver which introduces kids between the ages of 12 and 17, who wouldn’t otherwise have the means to do so, to the sport of hockey. CTV aired a story about us during yesterday’s news hour, which was pretty cool. Click the screen above to watch.
The calendars are 20 dollars and are available at The Sports Exchange (5th and Burrard in Vancouver), by ordering from eBay (shipping included! Click the word ‘eBay’) or emailing my office at: info at rebeccablissett.com
Photo session with Pacifika
The first week of January brought with it an amazing photo session with Pacifika for their new album out this spring. Even though we spent a rainy and cold afternoon shooting in an old house that overlooked the socked-in Burrard Inlet, I wanted the photos to look warm to reflect the band’s jazz and Latin influences. The shoot was contained to the first floor of the house but, even so, we pulled off several different settings. I also photographed the artwork for Pacifika’s last album, Asunciòn, about four years ago, and this shoot was as every bit enjoyable. I love working with these people.
To give you the rundown on Pacifika – taken from their site: “Pacifika is the multi-talented Silvana Kane, a Peruvian born singer, re-formed pop sensation (West End Girls), and accomplished actress with a love of flamenco, electronica, and textured percussion; Adam Popowitz a Canadian bred guitarist adept at new wave, classical, and pop, and a skilled producer responsible for a catalogue that includes indie rock and Armenian folk music; and Toby Peter, a dub wise bassist born in Canada and raised in Barbados, explorer of jazz, hip-hop, metal and Caribbean grooves. Together the Vancouver based trio is making a new kind of global pop, music that nods to its diverse international influences, while forging its own unique voice. Jazz infused and Latin tinged, marked by gently flowing melodies, deep grooves, waves of cracking percussion and the occasional burst of exhilarating guitar noise…”
